Friends. Seinfeld. Felicity. Gilmore Girls. LOST. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

I adored all of these TV shows because of the setting, the writing, the plot twists…but mostly? I loved the ensemble casts. You really couldn’t imagine any of these shows without the entire motley crew. Even the minor characters made a major impact.

And that’s probably why all the novels I’ve written also feature an ensemble cast too. I mean life is truly better with company, so why not employ that in fiction as well?

I recently finished Liane Moriarty’s latest Here One Moment. While the premise itself is rather audacious (I won’t spoil anything here), it’s her masterful interweaving of characters that kept me hooked until the end. She made me care about what happened to a slew of people in a singular story, and the way she eventually landed the proverbial plane kept me guessing right up until the final page. I highly recommend it.

How about you, fellow readers? Do you enjoy an ensemble cast or more of a traditional protagonist/antagonist situation?

On a side note, I’m writing my (gasp!) first novel with a traditional protagonist instead of an ensemble cast (wish me luck!). It’s tentatively titled We’ll Always Have Capri.
