My Apologies to Football Haters

For those of you who follow me on Facebook and/or Twitter who aren’t Green Bay Packer fans, or worse yet, if you’re the sort of person who deplores the whole idea of grown men dressing up in helmets and leggings and royally beating each other to a pulp week after week, thank you for your patience. I know this time of year, complete with all the requisite “Go Team!” posts, is the stuff your bad dreams are made of, so I can’t thank you enough for staying the course and not “unfriending” me. Ditto for anyone who happens to love… Continue reading

20 Years Since I Was a College Freshman?

A friend of mine was feeling a little nostalgic and recently wrote a blog post about how it’s been 20 (!!!) years since she was a freshman at North Central University, which was known back then as North Central Bible College. And that hit me pretty hard because she and I were (gasp!) in the same class. Has it really been two full decades since I started college? It was about this time in August 1994 when my Mom and I packed the family minivan full of more stuff than could possibly fit in a dorm room. I’m really not… Continue reading

Two BFFs, One Awesome Novel

Whether it’s called chick lit or a romantic comedy in novel form or women’s lit, I’ve always been a fan of smart and funny books written with the fairer sex in mind. But after being told again and again that chick lit was going the way of the CD, and I shouldn’t even bother writing my own because no one would ever consider publishing it, I stumbled upon a website that assured me that everything was going to be okay. That website was Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke’s Chick Lit is Not Dead. With a whip-smart sense of humor and… Continue reading

Total Blast From the Past

Some people play Candy Crush. Others watch The Real Housewives of Atlanta, New York City, Hoboken, whatever. But lately, my favorite time waster and/or procrastination method has been taking those ubiquitous Buzzfeed quizzes. You know, the ones that help you answer pressing questions like “What Romantic Comedy Best Describes Your Actual Love life?” Or “What State Do You Actually Belong In?” To wit, I recently discovered that if I were a ’90s pop icon, I would be Christina Aguilera. Well, at least I could sing, unlike, say, Britney or a Spice Girl or me outside of the shower. What cracks… Continue reading

38: The Year of Living Purposefully

Ever since I turned 30, I’ve been dreading the birthday I just celebrated two days ago. It’s not the “big” one that’ll happen in (gasp!) two more years, but in my mind, my 38th birthday was always the scarier milestone. In the hours leading up to January 2, I found myself feeling a lot like the girl on the left—a guest at a party I desperately didn’t want to attend. For me, 38 wasn’t just another year where I’d marvel at how quickly time has passed. It was the age my dad was when he passed away. Strangely enough, I… Continue reading

05.10.05: The Day I Said Yes in Chicago

I love whenever May 10th rolls around. In the world of Will and Christa, it’s a national holiday because it’s the day we got engaged back in 2005. Speaking of which, I can’t  believe that was eight (!!!) years already. Time is, indeed, flying right on by. Back in 2005, we were in Chicago because that’s where U2 was. While Will had seen those fabulous Irishmen in concert already, I hadn’t. So needless to say, that needed to be remedied, and the “Vertigo” tour was the perfect initiation. While U2 was just as spectacular as I thought they’d be live,… Continue reading
