Meet the Writers: Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke

Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke are not only some of my favorite authors but they are the best advocates for fellow writers, too.

When my first novels released back in 2007 and 2008 (!!!), they featured me, a total newbie, on their illustrious blog and have answered so many writer-y questions for me over the years with encouragement and candor. In short, they are utterly fabulous. And funny. Need proof? Check out their podcast, We Fight So You Don’t Have To.

Naturally, I’m already excited for their latest novel, Forever Hold Your Peace, to hit stores July 11. If you haven’t pre-ordered already, you can do so here. While we wait for their new story, I thought it would be fun to have them answer the Banister Questionnaire.

What’s the first book that made you crazy about reading?

Liz Fenton: I loved the the Nancy Drew books growing up! My mom found a set at a garage sale and I was hooked!

Lisa Steinke: The Beverly Cleary books! I loved Ramona!

Characters or plot?

Liz and Lisa: Both are important, but we tend to be drawn to writing high-concept plot-driven novels.

Which authors’ books do you always buy no matter what the story is about?

Liz and Lisa: Laura Dave, Allison Winn Scotch, Catherine McKenzie, Abby Jimenez, and Colleen Oakley.

Are you a plotter or a pantser and why does that method work best for you?

Liz and Lisa: We tend to be hybrids, depending on the book. For instance, thrillers need to be plotted meticulously, while we’re able to be a little more organic with our rom-coms.

Actual book or digital download?

Liz and Lisa: Actual book, hands down!

What’s your favorite bookstore? Location, please.

Warwick’s Bookstore, located in La Jolla, California

Describe your ideal writing environment.

Liz: A quiet morning in my office with a strong cup of coffee.

Lisa: Exactly what Liz said. The earlier the better before anyone else is awake!

Coffee or tea?

Liz and Lisa: COFFEE!!!

What’s your favorite way to procrastinate when you know you should be writing but don’t feel like it?

Liz and Lisa: Reading other books and binge-watching bad TV!

What are you working on at the moment?

Liz and Lisa: We are working on a proposal that we can’t say much about-but will assure you it’s a little different and fun and we’re so excited about it!
